The Town Trail
Clare Town Trail is a fantastic, informal way to experience our town’s proud history at your pace.
Following the seven trail posts and 21 brass pavement markets to get a fascinating insight into what makes Clare’s heritage so special.
Each post provides information on the buildings nearby and are located at:
- At Clare Castle Country Park, near Platform 1 cafe
- Near the Station Road entrance
- On Market Hill
- At the foot of Common Street
- On High Street near the Baptist Church
- On Nethergate Street near the White House
- In Clare Priory
Furthermore, 21 pavement markers have been placed along the Trail, at a selection of Clare’s over 130 Listed Buildings.
These, and many other interesting buildings, have been described in an accompanying booklet and are shown in its 60 images.
The revised Trail has been a collaboration between Clare Ancient House Museum and Clare Castle Country Park, through its development grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
It aims to guide visitors to the Park and the town on a journey connecting the proud history of both, from the Park’s Norman Castle ruin and former railway station, to the town’s wool- and cloth-related former wealth (its gothic church and timber-framed clothiers houses), and finally its scenic riverside walks.
The booklet is on sale for £2 in several local shops, and will be sold from the Museum during its season.
